Jedes Flugzeug mit mehr als neun Sitzplätzen muss nach den Vorschriften der Easa zum Flugbetrieb eine Axt mit sich führen. Crash Axe ist der Fachbegriff für dieses Werkzeug. Es besteht aus speziellen Legierungen und ist gegen Stromschlag isoliert. Die Axt muss im Cockpit aufbewahrt werden.Ursprünglich waren diese Äxte dafür gedacht, bei einem Absturz schnell aus dem Cockpit zu kommen oder auch um bei der Evakuierung zu helfen. Heute ist das kaum mehr Grund. Vielmehr geht es darum an Brandherde zu kommen, die hinter einer Abdeckung im Cockpit oder der Kabine entstehen können.
