When using tools on components that are at risk from electronic discharge (ESDS - electro static discharge sensitive devices), the relevant standards and regulations (e.g. IEC TR 61340-5, DIN EN 61340-5, SP Method 2472) require controlled discharge
of electrical charges through the handles of such tools. In this way, components are safely protected from electrostatic energy and associated damage.

The use of highly integrated circuits, called ICs, is making electrical devices smaller and smaller. However, ICs usually react to electrostatic energy fields with malfunctions or total
failure. Therefore, electrostatically protected pliers are indispensable in such applications.
